Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering for L.A. Family Housing (LAFH) is a great way for you to help us continue to provide homeless children, families and individuals with the services they need to regain self-sufficiency and maintain their independence. Click here for our online Volunteer Registration Form.

The following are ways in which you can help:

Cafeteria

Help prepare and serve a meal for our residents.
LAFH operates two shelters in North Hollywood. Our Transitional Living Facility provides housing for families with children and our Valley Shelter Facility provides housing for individual adults. Each is equipped with an industrial size kitchen and provides our clients with three meals a seven days a week. We serve approximately 1,500 meals a day and depend on volunteers to help prepare, serve and clean up the meals. Volunteers must be sixteen years of age or older to work in our kitchen.

Youth Activities

Create arts & crafts, sporting activities, storytelling, etc.
You can work with the children and youth residing in our family program to create arts and crafts, hold sporting activities or have a storytelling time at either our Transitional Living Center in North Hollywood or Comunidad Cesar Chavez in Boyle Heights. We especially need volunteers to develop and lead afterschool activities for our school-ages youth.

Host a Birthday Party for the Youth of the Shelter
Throw a birthday bash and celebrate the Birthdays of the Month for the children of LA Family Housing. Remembering and acknowledging a child’s birthday is fun, creative and means so much to the child and their family. We need volunteers to come out and have fun by hosting birthday parties either for the toddlers or the children/teens.

Beautify our Premises

Beautify our premises by painting or gardening.
You clean up our surrounding gardens or tidy up a room for a new family. Beautifying our surroundings both helps our clients gain self-esteem and helps revitalize the local neighborhood. We are seeking volunteers to help create Welcome Baskets and to decorate rooms so families may feel warmly welcomed. We also need volunteers to help clean the public spaces and organize our children’s library Click here for a list of our facilities.

Sort Donations
Volunteers make sure our clients receive the hygiene and clothing products they need. Consider volunteering your time to work in the donations room, sorting and distributing necessary donated products to our clients to enhance the quality of their lives.

Clerical/Office Support

Filing, faxing, office clean up, etc.
You can assist our agency sites with filing, faxing, answering phones, etc. Hundreds of clients use our facilities on a daily basis, and a lot of recordkeeping is necessary.

Teaching/Tutoring

Provide tutoring for children, youth and adults. Many LAFH residents need help with basic skills in reading, writing, arithmetic, and other subjects.
You can assist by tutoring people on an individual basis or in group mini-courses (e.g. fitness, CPR, first aid, computer skills, horticultural skills, presentation/public speaking skills, basic business and finance skills), or through the provision of employment assistance services (résumé preparation, job search). If you are interested in tutoring a child, please contact Steve Hibbert, our School on Wheel Coordinator at shibbert@schoolonwheels.org.

If you would like to volunteer your time and expertise, please contact Amanda Batts at (818) 982-4091 ext. 129 or Rebecca Kraemer at (818) 982-4091 ext. 125.
