The Buckner Family

Chrishelle Buckner arrived at L.A. Family Housing's Sydney M. Irmas Transitional Living Center (TLC) in February 2004 with her 18-month-old daughter, Maya. Chrishelle was homeless after having fled a domestic violence situation. She was also seven months pregnant. In addition, little Maya has heart and liver ailments, and being homeless was especially hard on her.

TLC staff helped Chrishelle enroll at L.A. Valley College, where she began taking classes toward an associate degree in respiratory therapy.

Chrishelle gave birth to a healthy baby daughter, Summeray, after moving into TLC. TLC staff helped Chrishelle enroll at L.A. Valley College, where she began taking classes toward an associate degree in respiratory therapy. She is still enrolled in the program and is currently completing her coursework, with the goal of becoming a respiratory therapist. While residing at TLC, Chrishelle also completed life skills classes in the areas of parenting and drug education.

While continuing her studies, Chrishelle also secured part-time employment in a major retail store, and through TLC's mandatory savings program, she worked on saving money toward transitioning into permanent housing. She credits TLC with getting her family off the streets and into a safe environment, and with helping her family move into a home of their own.

"We can't believe the size of our apartment!" Chrishelle exclaimed.
"The girls love having their own room. And our eating habits have improved now that we have our own kitchen."

In June 2006, Chrishelle and her daughters, now four and two years old, moved from TLC into a brand new two-bedroom apartment in L.A. Family Housing's newest affordable rental housing development, the 30-unit "Cecil Younger Gardens" in Van Nuys. She recently shared that the entire family is doing well. "We can't believe the size of our apartment!" Chrishelle exclaimed. "The girls love having their own room. And our eating habits have improved now that we have our own kitchen, which is good for Maya." LAFH wishes the Buckner family continued health and success in their new home!
