Holiday Celebration for Shelter Families

The children of families residing at Comunidad Cesar Chavez were “adopted” for a day by the organization A Chance for Children. Arrangements were made for resident children to participate in a barbeque and be greeted by University of Southern California head football coach Pete Carroll playing the role of Santa Claus. Gifts were distributed among the children and Mr. Carroll graciously signed many of the items as requested by the kids.

LAFH the Benefactor of New Desks

Office Depot and the “Today Show” came together in a partnership that provided L.A. Family Housing with over 250 brand new desks. Every family who exits the transitional shelters, TLC and CCC, will be given a desk to take with them as they move out of the shelter and into homes of their own. Tenants currently residing at LAFH’s permanent affordable housing will also be offered the desks based on need and availability.

Valley Shelter Adds 8 New Beds

City funding for emergency beds was recently made available by the Mayor. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), who is responsible for administering the funds, has awarded L.A. Family Housing approximately $130,000 for 17 months. This money will cover the cost of 8 new beds of emergency shelter at Valley Shelter in North Hollywood.

Comunidad Cesar Chavez Receives L.A. City Beautification Grant

The Breed Street Collaborative, a group led by L.A. Family Housing staff, is the grateful recipient of a $10,000 Beautification Grant from the City of Los Angeles. Funding from the grant will be used to start a neighborhood garden at the Comunidad Cesar Chavez (CCC) family shelter in East L.A. In addition two murals will be painted on nearby homes that are frequently the targets of graffiti. The CCC shelter and staff has been a positive contribution to the community and they hope to continue improving the quality of the neighborhood through their constructive leadership.
