Hoffman Brown Salutes/Feeds - April 28, 2007
On
Saturday, April 28, 2007, L.A. Family Housing board member and President
of Hoffman Brown Company, Steve Brown led over 300 volunteers-in an inspirational
effort to prepare care packages for troops and marines serving in Iraq and
Afghanistan as well as food boxes for L.A. Family Housing residents.
A
combination of employees with family and friends, the volunteers willingly
gathered on a sunny Saturday morning on the roof of the Hoffman Brown Company
offices in Sherman Oaks to assemble the 18,000 packages as part of HBC Salutes
2007. In addition to basic toiletry items, candy, and other items to make
life away from home more bearable, each package included a special thank
you card hand written by a volunteer, many of them school children who attended
the event. Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Custer, an Army Green Beret who commanded
a Special Forces Battalion in Afghanistan, was also present and spoke in
high praise of the work that was being done.
This year's "HBC Salutes" event was held in honor of Captain Sean Brock
(USMC), who was killed in
action while stationed in Iraq in February 2005. The HBC team worked closely
with members of the Sean Brock Foundation to obtain the materials and letters
to be included in the care packages.
From
start to finish, spirits were as high as the temperature! Red, white and
blue balloons offered a patriotic splash of color and pride with music playing
throughout the preparation. The event was officially kicked off by a moving
presentation of the Colors by Marine Corps Color Detail. Participants also
enjoyed lunch and other refreshments. When asked why HBC had chosen to undertake
such an event, Mr. Brown responded simply: "Because it's the right thing
to do." All those in attendance wore T-shirts bearing that very mantra and
it was an inspirational sight to behold. All who participated in the HBC
Salutes event left with a very fulfilling sense of accomplishment, gratitude
to our troops, and pride in a good hard day's work.
