Family Housing's Christmas in the Spring, On Saturday,
April 21st, 2007, L.A. Family Housing’s Valley Shelter became a literal
playground for over 750 children and families participating in the fun and
excitement of Universal Studio’s “Christmas in the Spring”
event. Sponsored by Universal Studios Hollywood’s “Discover
a Star” Foundation, the event celebrated its 16th year with great
festivities and plenty of “holiday cheer” for all who attended.
Characters from Universal Studios, including Dora The Explorer and Diego, Beetlejuice, Woody Woodpecker, Curious George, and SpongeBob SquarePants, entertained the children while they also had the opportunity to take photos with Santa Claus, sitting on his lap as he distributed gifts. Plenty of treats—shaved ice and cotton candy—in addition to a full barbeque meal with hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, beans and salad, kept everyone’s tummy full while they enjoyed live music from a steel drum player.
Children could test their skills at various carnival games such as basketball and beanbag toss. Washable “tattoos” were also available with other art and craft projects, such as creating bookmarks for the age-appropriate books given to each child in attendance.
The
excitement of the day was contagious and everyone present remarked on the
great decorations and food. Many L.A. Family Housing children and families
were able to take advantage of this wonderful event, enjoying an opportunity
for some fun and benefiting from Universal’s gracious gifts and donations
in a time of year when their needs are often overlooked.
