Big Sunday
L.A. Family Housing's temporary living facilities, Trudy and Norman Louis
Valley Shelter (VS) and
Sydney M. Irmas Transitional Living Center in North Hollywood (TLC), and
Comunidad Cesar Chavez (CCC) in Boyle Heights, were abuzz with activity
on the weekend of April 28th and 29th marking the city-wide community-service
event known as "Big Sunday."
"Big
Sunday," as arranged by the city of Los Angeles, utilizes schools, nonprofit
organizations, generous individuals, and civic groups to provide volunteer
work at designated venues all across the city. L.A. Family Housing (LAFH)
was the fortunate recipient of nearly 100 who gave of their time and energy
to work at our three transitional living sites. Dressed in the signature
"Big Sunday" t-shirts, white backgrounds dotted by colorful handprints with
a heart impression in the palm, the volunteers got their hands dirty on
an assortment of beautification projects at each site.
At Valley Shelter, volunteers gathered to put fresh coats of paint on the
doors of residents' rooms and at TLC volunteers came out on both Saturday
and Sunday to do planting and gardening around the shelter, re-painting
the railings, and an overall "spring cleaning" of the building and grounds.
Volunteers also met at CCC on Sunday to work in the community garden as
well as host a variety of children's activities for the residents which
included face painting, balloon animals, and even a children's seminar on
planting and gardening. To keep the group of workers energized, DJs-teen
residents of LAFH-pumped tunes out into the crowd. Volunteers enjoyed a
barbeque lunch served on-site to help them "re-fuel." LAFH residents at
all three facilities joined in the volunteer work, as did staff. It truly
as a "Big (Saturday and) Sunday" for L.A. Family Housing.
