MAYOR HAHN DEDICATES AND RENAMES COMUNIDAD CESAR CHAVEZ
FAMILY SHELTER IN BOYLE HEIGHTS
Los Angeles – Mayor Jim Hahn presided over
the dedication and renaming of the Comunidad Cesar Chavez
family shelter in Boyle Heights. Since it opened in 1998, the
facility has served more than 1,200 families from East Los Angeles
and currently shelters 100 family members each night.
“Families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless
population. The renovations at Comunidad Cesar Chavez family shelter
will enable homeless families to remain united as they transition
into permanent housing,” said Mayor Hahn. “Today marks
the success of emergency shelter programs and sets an important
example of what can be achieved when there is sufficient funding
and a commitment to increasing access.”

“I am so proud to be a part of this dedication
ceremony for the Comunidad Cesar Chavez family shelter,” said
Councilmember Antonio Villaraigosa. “The
center represents so much of what Cesar Chavez himself represents
for many of us…family well-being, shelter for the homeless,
public service and community,” added Villaraigosa.
“The Chavez Foundation is pleased to support
this newly renovated shelter because it is a fitting tribute to
Cesar’s belief in the inherent value and potential of every
human being,” said Andres F. Irlando, President of
the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation.
